Justice studies in Wales

Sask Polytech Justice Studies students joined classes at Cardiff and Vale College as part of a study abroad opportunity and completed a research project comparing differences in each country’s legislative background. The trip was funded by Employment and Social Development Canada’s Global Skills Opportunity program, which aims to empower post-secondary institutions to increase the participation of Canadians in international learning opportunities. Akenke Oliver

Sask Polytech Business diploma student, Akenke Oliver, is the first female bobsled pilot athlete from Trinidad and Tobago. Akenke’s unwavering determination and lifelong passion for sport have propelled her to this groundbreaking achievement. In January 2024, she flew to Austria to prepare for the IBSF Europacup race, marking her first in-person training experience with her teammates and an actual bobsled. She shared that her first time in the bobsled was surreal and she quickly fell in love with the sport. Read more.

Christian Singh

Always one to go against the grain, Christian Singh, Sask Polytech alumnus, now serves as the chief cider maker at Crossmount Cider Company. A conversation with his dad led Singh to the BioScience Technology program. Singh says having a solid educational foundation and good intuition transfers well into cider making. Read more.

Nutrien gift annoucement

Sask Polytech received the largest gift from a corporate donor in its history from Nutrien – toward its Time to Rise campaign supporting the construction of the new Saskatoon campus. In recognition of this transformative gift of $15 million, the School of Mining, Manufacturing and Engineering Technologies has been renamed the Nutrien School of Mining, Manufacturing and Engineering Technologies. Hannin Creek Winter Camp

Each year in March, first-year Sask Polytech students in two natural resources programs participate in week-long winter camps at the Hannin Creek Education and Applied Research Centre (HCEARC) in northern Saskatchewan. Run in partnership with the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation and located on the shores of Candle Lake, the facility is an ideal spot to experience both the beauty and extremes of a Canadian winter. The camps give students in the Integrated Resource Management (IRM) and Resource and Environmental Law (REL) programs a one-week, intensive outdoor experience and the opportunity to put classroom learning into practice. Dental Day 2024

Students and volunteers came together at the Sask Polytech dental clinic at Regina Campus on April 6, 2024 to provide quality health care to 71 clients from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and Regina Open Door Society. Volunteers and students completed $53,456 worth of dentistry work. Read more.

Joseph A Remai

Sask Polytech received an extraordinary gift of $25 million from real estate developer and philanthropist Joseph A. Remai. To acknowledge this generous donation, which is the largest gift from an individual the institution has ever received, the new Saskatoon campus to be built at Innovation Place will be named the Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Joseph A. Remai Saskatoon Campus. Read more.

Skills event in Regina

In April, Sask Polytech hosted a practice competition at its Regina campus in preparation for the WorldSkills 2024 event. The competition brought together Clyde Abanid, a talented Graphic Communications student from Sask Polytech, along with international competitors from Austria, France and Switzerland. This practice competition served as a valuable opportunity for Abanid and other students to test their graphic design skills and bridge any training gaps before the WorldSkills 2024 competition in Lyon, France. Leslie and Irene Dube gift

Sask Polytech announced a $7.5 million gift from renowned philanthropists and successful business leaders Leslie and Irene Dubé toward its Time to Rise campaign supporting the construction of the new Joseph A. Remai Saskatoon Campus. In recognition of this gift during National Nursing week – the School of Nursing was renamed the Leslie and Irene Dubé School of Nursing. Read more.

Robot Rumble

In early May Sask Polytech hosted Robot Rumble, presented by SaskTel, where 56 teams of 130 students from 26 high schools from across the province showcased their technical expertise and problem-solving abilities. Students worked in pairs to construct, program and test robots made from SUMO robot kits. The Electronic Systems Engineering Technology students and instructors actively contribute to the event by assisting with setup and judging the SUMO robot battles. Read more.

Pow wow 2024

At Prince Albert campus, Sask Polytech hosted its second annual powwow to honour miyo wâhkôhtowin. Powwows are a central aspect of Indigenous culture and provide an opportunity to celebrate traditions, showcase talent and bring people together in a spirit of unity and friendship. Sask Polytech had 80 dancers and 300 attendees. Read more.

Filipino nursing graduates

Last June the province’s health care system welcomed 228 internationally educated nurses (IENs) graduating from an innovative new Sask Polytech program aimed at helping transition nurses here from the Philippines. Created in response to the Government of Saskatchewan’s Health Human Resources (HHR) Action Plan, the Transition to Registered Nursing in Canada (TRNC) program is a cooperative solution to an identified need for more nurses across the province. Sod turning event

In August Advanced Education Minister Colleen Young and SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister Terry Jenson joined Saskatoon community members, dignitaries and Sask Polytech faculty and staff to break ground on the site of the first building for the new Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Joseph A. Remai Saskatoon Campus at Innovation Place. Read more.

Lake Sturgeon project

In the cool, murky waters of the North Saskatchewan River, the Lake Sturgeon silently swims, its lineage stretching back 200 million years. The pre-historic fish is currently on the endangered list and Sask Polytech researchers and students have been hard at work over the past three years to collect information on the reproductive health and population dynamics of this remarkable species without causing further harm. Paralympic Games rowing seat

Members of Sask Polytech’s Research, Additive Manufacturing and Prototyping (RAMP) team built the rowing seat used by Jacob Wassermann at the Paralympic Games in Paris. They followed the PR1 athlete’s races with bated breath. The competition was Wassermann’s second international meet, after earning a silver medal at the Continental Qualification Regatta in Brazil last spring. The custom-made seat changed training and improved the rowing experience. Read more.

Polar Bear Eco Tour

November 2024 marked Sask Polytech’s third Polar Bear Eco-Trip, where the public and polytechnic come together for education and adventure through a visit to Churchill, Manitoba in search of polar bears. The trip has included students from the School of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Sustainability in previous years, and this year, Recreation and Tourism Management students had the opportunity to apply for spots on the adventure. Read more.

New Ambulance Simulator

Sask Polytech has acquired new ambulance simulators to help prepare Primary Care Paramedic program and Advanced Care Paramedic program students for their future careers. These simulators feature both driving and ambulance box components and are installed at Regina and Saskatoon campuses. Read more.

Impala car project

A group of students from Sask Polytech had the unique opportunity to restore a rare, classic vehicle as part of their training with the Auto Body Technician program. Each year, students tackle a distinctive project, and for 2024, they took on the challenge of fixing the body of a 1959 Impala convertible. Read more.
