“We are never too old to continue learning. Age is just a number, not something that
defines us or our ability.”
Daryl Brabant first set foot on Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Moose Jaw campus (then
SIAST) in the mid 1990s where he earned his welding certificate. Over 25 years later,
he chose Sask Polytech again, returning to the same campus for his Business diploma.
The Métis student says, “Being an older student, it is sometimes difficult to balance
my studies with my home life. I also had to understand my learning disabilities to
move forward academically.”
He found a welcome network of support on campus. Daryl says, “On campus, I used Learning
Services, the Indigenous Students’ Centre and connected with an Indigenous student
advisor. These services help me understand my program and my unique learning needs.”
He adds that the Indigenous Students’ Centre provides him with a quiet place to work
and his Indigenous student advisor “offers general support and points me in the direction
to succeed even further.”
If he could travel back in time and offer himself advice he says, “I would tell myself
to continue working hard because the reward at the end is graduation. To see myself
from the beginning to where I am now, I’m quite shocked how far I’ve come. It’s amazing.”
