Sarah Martin isn’t new to Saskatchewan Polytechnic. She completed her Grade 12 in 2010 after being encouraged by her mother who had been a student in the Office Administration program. Pleased with her previous experience, Sarah returned when she sought to further her post-secondary education.
"The way things are taught, the hands-on experience and the everyday practice of doing what’s relevant is an amazing feature this institution brings,” she says.
During her time at Sask Polytech, Sarah used many of the supports available to students. The library helped her with research and citations, while counselling provided mental health support and assistance navigating a diagnosis. Learning services helped her prepare for tests and access accommodations. Through the Indigenous Students' Centre, she found a sense of belonging and connection with staff and other students. Student awards provided financial assistance, easing her financial strain and helping her continue school while spending time with her daughter.
"Being a mom, learning what is needed in less time helps me to advance my career and personal growth while allowing me to be there to help my daughter grow. There's a great balance between academic and personal life," she says.
