“I hope to inspire others to pursue their education while staying proud of who they are and where they come from. Even if you’re a mature student like myself, just do it.”
Monique Lafontaine always dreamt of being a nurse. Saskatchewan Polytechnic is helping to make it happen.
She upgraded her Grade 12 classes at Sask Polytech in 2024, giving her the base she needed to go into the Psychiatric Nursing program.
"The support is huge! It's amazing how many people want to see you succeed," she says.
Psychiatric nursing is a specialty that means a lot to Monique. As she navigates part-time work, parenting and post-secondary education, she remains dedicated to her goals.
"I hope to work in rural communities. I want to travel if possible. I want to work with addictions. I believe there is a huge stigma amongst the Indigenous community about addictions," she says.
