Latin binomial name: Vaccinium myrtilloides
Woods Cree name: itinimina (also ithinimina)
Plains Cree name: iyinimina

A small shrub, 10-50 centimeters tall, growing in sandy or gravel soils. It thrives in clearings of coniferous stands of the boreal forest. This woody plant can grow in dense clusters and is characterized by its soft, lance-shaped, velvety leaves. The spring flowers are shaped like delicate white urns, which develop into the petite, blue fruit, familiar to all “pickers”.

Another powerhouse antioxidant, from the roots and stems to the berry itself, this plant is worth knowing and utilizing, mostly used for consumption, even drying them for winter use. The roots, branches and leaves are perfect for a vitamin packed delicate but delicious tea.
