“With the right mindset and perseverance, anything is possible.”
Moving away from home for the first time was a big step for Lee Sanderson. At the start of her Practical Nursing program, loneliness hit hard. That changed when she joined the wîcihitowin Transition Program. “It prepared me for the academic year, eased my transition into post-secondary and introduced me to my best friend,” she says.
Lee quickly found her rhythm. The Indigenous Students' Centre became her favourite spot to a study, share meals and recharge. She also leaned on student awards and the Girls Group for support and connection. “The staff here are so helpful and welcoming. Whenever I face a challenge, there’s always someone ready to assist me. It makes me feel valued.”
Her dream is to work in her home community or surrounding reserves, focusing on sexual health to help eliminate the stigma surrounding Indigenous and vulnerable populations.
Thinking back to the beginning of her journey at Sask Polytech, she offers her past self and others words of encouragement, “You are strong, hardworking and dedicated. Don’t let anything stand in your way.”
