“You don’t know what you’re capable of until you try.”
Amber Suidak chose Saskatchewan Polytechnic because of the Indigenous services and the welcoming atmosphere at the Indigenous Students’ Centre. Her dad and brother also spoke highly of Sask Polytech from their own experiences, which encouraged her to apply.
“Getting out of my comfort zone, meeting new people and discovering myself has been my favourite experience,” she says. The centre’s events helped her feel connected and included.
Amber faced challenges with housing, transportation and food insecurity, but support from advisors, coordinators and campus services made a difference. A stand-out moment came when an Indigenous advisor encouraged her to pursue Early Childhood Education despite her doubts. “That gave me the confidence to keep going,” she says.
Amber envisions working with children and youth in schools and hopes to one day join a government agency. Her advice to others? “Change is hard, but if you’re not changing things, you’re accepting them.”
