Find Your Zen on your own time:

There are many apps that offer moments of tranquility and  aimed at supporting mental health.  Consider exploring one of these to get you started.

  • Insight Timer -  offers over 14,000 FREE offering focused on meditation, yoga and sleep.
  • Headspace- refer to the app as a personal trainer for your mind. It has offers cute animations. There are some great free meditations to help you learn how to meditate. For access to all tools there is a monthly fee.
  • Stop, Breathe, Think. -A friendly, simple tool to guide people of all ages and backgrounds through meditations for mindfulness and compassion. Contains free and for purchase tools. All profits go to Tools for Peace, which inspires people of all ages to develop kindness and compassion in everyday life.

Meditative Breathing

The breath is effective technique to ease the mind and develop a sense of inner calmness.

Explore Box Breathing.  A technique, created by a Navy SEAL. This technique involves:  

  • Breathing in for 4 seconds
  • Pausing 4 four seconds
  • Breathing out for 4 seconds
  • Pausing for another 4 seconds

Depending on lung capacity, consider changing to 3, 5, or 6 seconds. Repeat about four minutes or until calm returns.

Intramurals, Challenges and Game Night

A friendly competition is always a great way to meet new friends, share lots of laughs and have a chance to win an Intramural Champion t-shirt and other fun prizes!

 

E-sports intramurals

Round robin games will be played to get seeding; your standings will determine your positioning in the single elimination bracket.

Sports: FIFA 20; NHL 20; Madden 20; NBA 2K20

Wave 1—January 18 - February 12*

  • If you are interested in taking part in multiple sports, please fill out multiple registration forms.

  • SaskPolytech is not responsible for supplying a console or game for participation. You must have the console and game in order to be able to participate.

  • Sports will run for both PS4 and Xbox One consoles (with adequate participants) via online gameplay only.

  • It will be the responsibility of all participants to complete matches within the set timeframes.

  • Any games not completed before the set end date will result in losses for both teams.

  • Any reports of verbal abuse will receive one warning. Next complaint will result in removal from the competition.

  • Full game play settings will be sent once you sign up.

The purpose of wellness challenges is to encourage healthy lifestyle behaviours in a supportive environment. An incentive can also be encouraging. Check out each challenge to see what incentive is offered.

Elevation Challenge (October)

Did you the know the highest point of elevation in Saskatchewan is in a farmer’s field in the Cypress Hills at 1392m. We want to challenge you and see if we can reach this elevation in October.

Fitness Class Challenge (November 23 - December 18)

We challenge you to explore a Sask Polytechnic Fitness Class with a chance to win a $25 Amazon Gift Card (GC) weekly.

How to enter:

  • Join a ZOOM fitness class (link to classes listed above)
  • Comment on your favorite workout of the week on YouTube – Fitness On-Demand
  • Comment on our weekly Fitness class post on Instagram (IG) and Facebook (Facebook) - @saskpolytechfitandrec

Each fitness class will begin with an intro to the challenge and how you can win a GC so you won’t miss a beat during your workout. A $25 Amazon GC will be randomly drawn on each of our social media platforms ( ZOOM, YouTube, IG and FB). You can increase your chances of winning by entering on multiple platforms.

During our Zoom fitness classes, a “special guest” will make an appearance weekly. If you spot him during the class, you have a chance to win some extra prizes! If you can’t make it to a Zoom fitness class, no problem: all workouts are uploaded on YouTube so you can comment on there.

10,000 Daily Step Challenge (January)

Step into the New Year with their 10,000 daily step challenge! For the month of January, the goal is to document how many steps you take each day and log your weekly total. Prizes up for grabs and accomplishment badges awards!

Keep Stepping (February)

10,000 daily step challenge continues. Let the momentum grow and keep moving with the 10,000 daily step challenge!

Move More (March)

This challenge is all about making your whole day matter and being mindful of your movement habits.

Move More Outside (April)

Move More Outside wellness challenge is all about reducing sedentary time (prolonged sitting) and enjoying some physical movement outdoors.  

Stay social in the comfort of your own home!  Join us every second Thursday at 8 p.m. for a LIVE game night through Zoom. Each week, we will hang out and enjoy a new game.

What are games being played?

  • Trivia: Challenge your knowledge of random facts and popular topics through a series of questions needing a timed response.   Note: You will need a two devices (laptop, tablet, cell phone).  On one device you will download the Kahoot! app.
  • Quick Draw: Inspire by Pictionary, players attempt to draw an identified word while others guess the answer. Grab a pen and paper, prepare for some laughs.
  • Bingo: Each player tries to cross off numbers on their card as they are randomly selected and called out by the bingo caller. Games can have different patterns to complete to win.  It is beneficial to have two devices (phone and a laptop).  Be prepared to call out “BINGO!” when you win!
    • More games to come.

Duane’s education includes a degree in Anatomy from the University of Saskatchewan, registered massage therapist from the Western College of Remedial Massage Therapy and recognition with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) as a Certified Exercise Physiologist. He has worked at Sask Polytech for 10 years and he’s been involved in the health and fitness industry for just over 30 years.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic main campuses have a fully equipped fitness center offering a wide range of cardio equipment, free weight areas as well as assorted loaded weight and cable stations to enjoy a well-rounded workout. 

Sask Polytech COVID Info: To minimize all non-essential contact, all fitness and recreation areas are closed until further notice.

The Moose Jaw, Prince Albert and Saskatoon main campuses have gymnasiums equipped with a variety of sporting goods and netting equipment utilized for intramurals, open gym times. There is also a selection of equipment for personal sign out.

Harry Bailey Aquatics Centre – Saskatoon

Students, staff, faculty and alumni (including up to immediate family members) can enjoy the Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre (Saskatoon Campus) at no cost with proof of Saskatchewan Polytechnic affiliation. If you are a student/employee/alumni with an outdated SaskPolytech ID card, you will be able to use that expired card to access the aquatic center.

If you do not have a Saskatchewan Polytechnic ID card, the process to gain access will be as follows:

  1. Log into your mySaskPolytech portal homepage to prove you are part of the Saskatchewan
    Polytech community.
  2. You then must show photo identification that matches the name in the top right of the
    mySaskPolytech portal.
    *Family access is only available with affiliate present

Alumni

Sask Polytech alumni photo ID cards issued in previous years will be accepted as proof of Sask Polytech affiliation. If you do not have an alumni photo ID card, email alumni@saskpolytech.ca providing your name, program and year of graduation. Once confirmed, you will receive an email confirming your affiliation. The email along with photo identification that matches the name on the email will be required to access the facility.
