You'll learn by doing

The blend of knowledge, skills and experience you’ll acquire here is a big advantage in today’s job market. Work-integrated learning comes in many forms. Depending on your program, you may participate in:

Clinical placements provide direct, hands-on learning in a supervised, real-world setting. They are integral to many of our nursing and health sciences programs. It’s a chance to practice what you learned in class with real people and real equipment in an actual job setting.
Co-operative work terms are offered in many of our business and engineering technology programs. Co-op work terms give you a chance to work in an industry related to your field of study. Most are full time, paid positions, so you earn while you learn. Work terms help build professional knowledge and skills, while also opening the door to career connections.
Equipment time is the ultimate in learning by doing. In many Sask Polytech programs, you spend a lot of “classroom” time working with modern, industry-specific equipment in first-rate shop and lab facilities.
Field investigations provide “boots on the ground” learning experiences. Dedicated field work classes let you practice specific tasks, hone outdoor skills and participate in group activities. In many programs, field work is integrated into labs to enrich hands-on learning.
Labs are the foundation of work-integrated learning in almost all science and technology programs. Labs help you translate classroom theory into practical application. This is where you learn to use equipment, build specialized skills, sharpen analytical thinking and develop professional competencies.
Machinery time is all about hands-on, real world, practical learning. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you learn how to assemble, service, repair, modify and overhaul a wide range of equipment.
Work practicums are unpaid work placements where you gain real world job experience. You learn by doing—on the job. Practicums also provide a first-hand taste of the kind of work and work environment you can expect in your chosen field.
Outdoor field camps are a highlight of Sask Polytech’s tourism and natural resources programs. Excellent fall and winter camp facilities at the Hannin Creek Centre on the shores of Candle Lake provide unforgettable experiences, with outdoor learning geared to specific program requirements.
