What to Do? Steps
To avoid escalation or repeated incidents, it is important to respond early. Be honest and speak up:
- Walk away.
- Think about what you want to say.
- Go back and say it.
If you believe you are being harassed or discriminated against:
- Advise the person that you feel offended by his or her actions or words and ask him or her to stop;
- Talk to your instructor or supervisor, or seek advice from a Harassment & Discrimination Consultant, a student counselor, a students association representative, a human resources representative, a union shop steward or an occupational health and safety representative;
- Write down the facts – date, time, what happened and names of any witnesses.
If you observe disrespectful behaviour:
- Approach the person who has been affected and offer support;
- Express your concern about what you observed to the person who is behaving disrespectfully;
- Inform the appropriate instructor or supervisor; and
- Write down the facts, date, time what happened and names of any witnesses.
