Saskatchewan Polytechnic programs are taught in English. If your first language is not English, you may need to show that you can read, write, speak and understand English well enough to succeed in your chosen program.

Our Programs

Saskatchewan Polytechnic offers several English proficiency tests to measure your skills. Test centres are located in Saskatoon and Regina.

Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment (CLBA)

The Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment (CLBA) measures the English communication skills of adults who have English as their second language. 

It’s Your Responsibility to Apply

Register for the CLBA in person at the Regina Campus Language Centre, Rm. 424. You’ll need to show your passport or government-issued photo identification and pay a $250 registration fee. A confirmation letter will be issued to candidates upon registering for the test and a reminder note is emailed to candidates one week before the test.

When & Where

CLBAs are held once every three months. The usually take from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There is a limit of five students per assessment date.


If you’re not able to take the assessment on the scheduled day, you must send a written request to cancel or transfer the assessment. We require a minimum of seven (7) days’ notice if you are unable to keep your appointment. A $50.00 administration fee will apply for cancellations and transfers. Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP)

CELPIP is the Canadian English Language Test for Immigration to Canada. The CELPIP General is a four-skill (listening, reading, writing and speaking) English language proficiency test designated by Citizenship and Immigration Canada for permanent resident status in Canada. The CELPIP General-LS is a two-skill (listening and speaking) English language proficiency test accepted by Citizenship and Immigration Canada for Canadian citizenship. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures your proficiency in English by testing your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. IELTS is accepted by over 10,000 organizations in 135 countries worldwide, including university employers, professional bodies and immigration authorities. Are you exempt?

Applicants who completed high school or received post-secondary training in certain countries are generally not required to prove their proficiency in English. See the list of exempt countries here.
