Green Energy Skills for a Sustainable Future

Build skills for the growing clean energy sector.

As Canada moves toward a lower-carbon economy, employers need skilled workers who understand renewable energy and sustainable technologies. These short, flexible online courses can help you explore clean energy, build practical skills and prepare for opportunities in areas like solar, wind, geothermal, energy storage and generator maintenance.

Whether you work in the trades, are looking for a new career path or want to expand your knowledge, these courses are a low-cost way to learn more about the technologies shaping the future of work.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic offers this training in partnership with Canadian Colleges for a Resilient Recovery (C2R2), supporting workforce development and Canada’s transition to net-zero emissions by 2050.

Courses

Online, asynchronous 15-hour courses.

Course completion deadline: March 31, 2027.

Have you ever wondered how electricity works and how batteries keep systems running? This course will teach you the basics of voltage, current and resistance using Ohm’s Law, and how these concepts work together in circuits. You will learn how to calculate equivalent resistance in series and parallel circuits and understand the fundamentals of batteries and power in DC systems. You will also explore how batteries charge and discharge, along with different charging methods and safety considerations.
Have you ever wondered how standby generators keep the power on during an outage? This course will teach you about the main components of a standby generator and how they work together. You’ll learn the typical operating sequence that ensures a smooth transition when the power goes out. We’ll also cover how emergency generator testing is done to make sure systems are reliable and ready when needed. By the end, you’ll understand how these systems operate and why proper testing is essential for safety and performance.
Have you ever wondered how geothermal energy can heat and cool buildings? This course will teach you the basic principles of geothermal energy and the different types of systems used today. You’ll learn how to assess a site, size a system, and safely install ground loops and heat pumps. We’ll also cover how to connect geothermal systems to building HVAC systems and how to troubleshoot and maintain them for long-term performance. By the end, you’ll have the knowledge and skills to work with one of the most efficient renewable energy technologies.
This course will teach you about the main components of a solar energy system, including the characteristics of diodes and photovoltaic panels. You’ll learn how to install solar panels correctly, position them for the best performance, and understand how shading and temperature affect efficiency. We’ll also cover how solar energy is stored in batteries and common installation issues to watch for. By the end, you’ll have the knowledge and skills to install and maintain solar systems safely and effectively.
Have you ever wondered how wind turbines turn wind into electricity? This course will teach you about the key performance characteristics of wind turbine generators, including how voltage, torque, and speed are related. You’ll learn how wind speed affects power output and why these factors matter for efficiency. We’ll also cover how energy from wind turbines is stored in batteries for later use. By the end, you’ll understand the basics of wind energy systems and how they deliver clean, reliable power.

These opportunities were made possible with Canadian Colleges for a Resilient Recovery (C2R2), a coalition of post-secondary institutions, including Saskatchewan Polytechnic, which provides training opportunities to acquire the skills needed to transition Canadian workers to support a clean economy.

The coalition aims to foster a more inclusive and equitable workforce, develop training and research opportunities, create inclusive opportunities, and continue to further truth and reconciliation with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people.
