English for Academic Purposes

Do you need to improve your language score (IELTS, TOEFL or other accepted equivalent) to meet the English language entrance requirements at Sask Polytech? If so, enrol in the English for Success courses to strengthen your language skills and to open the door to many of the programs at Sask Polytech.

Upon successful completion of English for Success Level 2, you will meet the English language entrance requirements for your chosen Sask Polytech program.

Who is this for?

International applicants who:

  • Are applying to a First Qualified First Admiitted (FQFA) Sask Polytech post-secondary program.
    • Note: English for Academic Purposes is not an option for students applying to Bachelor of Nursing (BScN), Practical Nursing or Power Engineering.
  • Meet the admission requirements (except for the English Language Requirement) for the post-secondary program they are applying to.
  • Have an overall IELTS academic score (or other accepted equivalent) of at least 5.5, but less than 6.5.

Courses

You will develop the language skills necessary to move from IELTS 5.5 to IELTS 6.0 (or equivalents) during this 15 week course.

You will develop and grow your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in the following areas:

  1. Understanding Canadian culture - holidays, customs, dress/appearance, eating habits, blended families, time-bound culture, etc.
  2. Understanding industry-specific culture - dress, policies, safety, language, mannerisms, protocols, confidentiality, etc.
  3. Understanding employment culture - labour laws, punctuality, management structure, initiative, conflict resolution, team work, religious beliefs, etc.

Length: 300-hours course (15 weeks; 20 hours per week)

  • Proof of meeting IELTS Academic 5.5. (or equivalent) 
  • Qualify for admission (except for the English Language Requirement) for the post-secondary program for which you are applying to.
    • Note: English for Academic Purposes is not an option for students applying to Bachelor of Nursing (BScN), Practical Nursing or Power Engineering.

You can receive joint admission to Saskatchewan Polytechnic's English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program and one of the many Saskatchewan Polytechnic post-secondary programs that are available to international applicants.

Admission to the EAP program is based on meeting the admission requirements (except for the English Language Requirement) for the program for which you are applying to.

When you apply to one of our post-secondary programs, you are automatically considered for EAP by providing your IELTS score.

You will move from IELTS 6.0 to IELTS 6.5 (or equivalents) during this 15 week course.

You will develop more advanced reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through the use of language in topics introduced in English for Success Level 1:

  1. Understanding Canadian culture
  2. Understanding industry-specific culture
  3. Understanding employment culture
  4. Applying post-secondary success techniques

Successful completion of English for Success Level 2 meets the English language entrance requirements to the post-secondary programs offered at Sask Polytech.

Start Date(s): January 2020 and May 2020

Length: 300-hours course (15 weeks; 20 hours per week)
