Virtual program prepares newcomers for Canadian project management positions
Canada’s diverse workforce is enriched by the skills and experience of new immigrants. Many newcomers struggle to have their previous education and experience recognized. Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Applied Project Management applied certificate can be a pivotal link for this group between international qualifications and the job market. While the program is open to everyone, it can be especially helpful to newcomers by both validating their existing skills and equipping them with an understanding of local industry standards and practices.
Dr. Olatunde Durowoju was an environmental consultant and research scientist in South Africa. When he moved to Canada, his lack of a formal project management certification hindered his job prospects. He shares, “When I was applying for positions, the employers were all looking for a formal certificate in project management or a PMP (Project Management Professional) credential, which I didn’t have.”
After a thorough search, Durowoju enrolled in Sask Polytech’s Applied Project Management
program, primarily because of its practical approach and the flexibility of online
learning. The program’s focus on real-world application, and organizational, communication
and teambuilding skills, stood out for him.
Upon completing the program, Durowoju’s career path widened considerably. His new credential, along with previous work experience, helped him secure multiple offers at environmental consulting companies across Canada. “I’ve also learned some new skills and best practices,” he says. “I’m now a more proactive and systematic project manager who is able to communicate much more effectively.”
In his current role with Brightspot Climate Inc., project management is vital for coordinating resources, schedules, budgets and stakeholder relationships. The focus on risk management has also been advantageous. “Now I really look at risks in advance to develop strong mitigation strategies. It has become a habit to plan for risks in advance with the team,” he says.
Sask Polytech’s Applied Project Management program consists of six courses taken over 14 weeks, covering the full life cycle of a real-life project chosen by students. The program also qualifies for the Canada-Saskatchewan Job Grant, which reimburses employers 60 per cent of tuition costs.
Says Winston Blake, Sask Polytech academic chair for Training Solutions: “This course would be beneficial to anyone looking to upgrade their project management skills to take their career to the next level. Participants in this program often work as project managers, supervisors or project coordinators and have project work experience that puts the learning into context, no matter what industry they choose to work in.”
