Shania Fiddler, a Métis woman, has some advice for fellow travellers on the post-secondary education path. “Enjoy the ride. Don’t look at the finish line so much, education is about the journey.”

It’s a viewpoint Shania has taken to heart as she nears the end of her Architectural Technologies program. “I’ve had to overcome a lot of obstacles throughout my time at Sask Polytech,” she says. “COVID was a big impact on my mental health, as I’m sure it was for everybody. At the start of the pandemic, I felt isolated not being able to drive over to campus and chat with classmates about assignments.”

Despite some difficult times, Shania shares that her Sask Polytech education has been a great investment. “The skills I’ve gained are invaluable and I’ve really enjoyed my work-terms. The interesting opportunities presented, as well as the amazing people I’ve met along the way, have made this journey really special. I am proud of how far I’ve come.”

“My favourite project was Design Day, when we got together as a group and designed a house based off of a style. The interior designers really liked our house, so that was encouraging and fun. That was a great day,” she says.

“You truly do meet life-long friends at Sask Polytech,” Shania adds. “When you’re studying don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help. You may not know the answer to something that someone else could help you with. What others may be struggling with, you could be the one who knows the answers.”
