Program: Correctional Studies diploma

Robert had been out of school for 10 years when he decided to enrol in the Correctional Studies diploma program at Sask Polytech’s Prince Albert campus.

“It was an easy choice for me because I already had positive experiences there,” Robert says. “I upgraded my high school grades at Sask Polytech because they offered night classes, which meant I could continue working while studying.”

The Correctional Studies program lived up to his high expectations. “What I like best about Sask Polytech is that it’s a positive environment to learn in. My instructors all had real life work experience that directly related to my program. They wanted to see me succeed,” the Inuk student shares, “and they made sure we were all aware of the resources available to students.”

Anyone who’s been out of school for a while knows the shift back to full-time classes can be challenging. Robert made good use of student services to help ease the way, starting with the Summer Transition  Program organized by fellow Indigenous students.

Robert says the decision to return to school was life changing. “I’d tell anyone considering going back to school that it’s a good choice,” he says. “Just remember that you’re not alone on your journey. When it gets hard, don’t give up. Keep pushing forward and do your best.”
