Nation: Métis
Program: Business certificate

Emma's advice to future students is this: Be friendly everywhere you go — always be punctual and present.

"I like the diversity of people at Sask Polytech. I have met a lot of people here and it's not too overwhelming," says Emma, a Métis woman. "I can join any event and know I am welcome."

Having to move from Saskatoon to Moose Jaw to attend school wasn't easy and the change was a bit scary. But Emma says services such as the Indigenous Students' Centre and the Sask Polytech Student Association helped make the transition from high school to post-secondary a smooth one.

"Being far from home for the first time is a little scary and unsettling, but we did ice breakers on the first day and I got to talk to every single person in my class. That helped me make friends so I didn't feel so alone," says Emma.

In 2017, Emma won the SaskTel Indigenous Youth Award of Excellence for Innovation, a scholarship for students entering their first year who have made positive changes in their school or community. With plans to begin the Business diploma program after she completes her Business certificate, Emma says she hopes to work in human resources and become a business leader in Saskatoon.
