The holiday season at Saskatchewan Polytechnic began with joy, laughter and a spirit
of togetherness. Through its annual Season of Sharing, the wītōkamāhtōtān Indigenous Student Success team created spaces where students could experience the warmth of community during
one of the busiest times of the year.
From December 1-5, Indigenous Students’ Centres across all four campuses became gathering places where students could pause from
the rush of exams and experience something deeper than holiday cheer. "The Season
of Sharing is about creating moments of connection and cultural celebration that remind
students they are supported and valued," says Deanna Kematch, director of Indigenous
Student Success.
The week was filled with conversations over steaming mugs of cocoa, laughter during
games and shared creativity through crafts and decorations. Virtual Cree Bingo hosted
by Elder Rick Daniels linked students across campuses, reminding everyone that community
can stretch beyond physical walls.

Over 900 students participated in the week’s events with Cree Bingo and holiday meals being among the most popular. Prizes and giveaways were held throughout the week with many students using their winnings and crafts to gift to family and friends.
"The support that we receive for this week truly makes a difference to our students. It strengthens the community that we build all year in the Centres and provides a chance to gather in light-hearted seasonal activities,” says Tracy Gobeil, Indigenous Students’ Centre coordinator in Prince Albert.

“Thank you to our sponsor, Farm Credit Canada, for helping provide a special experience to our students this holiday season and for joining us as volunteers,” adds Kematch.
For many students, these gatherings provided support during a season that can feel isolating. One student was moved to tears by the positive impact of the event, a reminder of the profound sense of belonging these celebrations bring.

"The Season of Sharing week is a wonderful time for students to engage with each other. We have very few opportunities where students have the chance to visit with each other without having any demands placed on them,” says Rosemarie Zaba Stewart, Moose Jaw campus Indigenous Students’ Centre coordinator and student advisor.
Season of Sharing is rooted in the idea that generosity and togetherness are powerful forces. It reflects Sask Polytech’s commitment to ensuring Indigenous students feel seen, supported and celebrated in their educational journey.
