Through LEED Green Associate training Saskatchewan Polytechnic demonstrates a commitment to quality construction and the environment
October 10, 2018 – Saskatchewan Polytechnic Bachelor of Construction Management students will now graduate with the knowledge needed to make buildings greener.
Partnering with the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), the Bachelor of Construction Management degree program will now include Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Associate training.
Making buildings greener can have a substantial impact on larger environmental goals. LEED is a rating system that is recognized as the international mark of excellence for green buildings in more than 160 countries. Since 2002, the CaGBC and LEED Canada have been redefining the buildings and communities where Canadians live, work and learn.
“At CaGBC, we are pleased to offer Saskatchewan Polytechnic students our online LEED Green Associate Study Course, as well as a professional membership to our Saskatchewan chapter,” said Carla Giles, vice-president, Regional Operations, at the Canada Green Building Council. “Earning a LEED Green Associate credential can increase a student’s employment opportunities. And a chapter membership allows people to connect with peers and mentors.”
Earning a LEED professional credential can also increase Sask Polytech graduates’ value to project teams and sustainability-focused organizations.
“LEED Green Associate training means our students will graduate with knowledge of how to manage green builds, including waste reduction, energy conservation and decreased water consumption,” says Paul Carter, dean of Sask Polytech's School of Construction. “Our Bachelor of Construction Management graduates will take this expertise with them into leadership roles in the heavy industrial, commercial, engineering and construction industries.”
The Bachelor of Construction Management program is unique in Saskatchewan and offers students the opportunity to earn an after-diploma baccalaureate degree with only an additional two years of study. The program was developed in response to global trends and needs for trained professionals in the construction industry. The program combines practical multi-faceted skills with theoretical knowledge and technical training.
CaGBC is the leading national organization dedicated to advancing green building and sustainable community development practices. As the voice of green building in Canada, CaGBC works closely with national and chapter members in an effort to make every building greener. The CaGBC reduces environmental impacts from the built environment through project certifications, advocacy and research. CaGBC established the LEED® green building rating system in Canada and developed the country’s first Zero Carbon Building Standard in May 2017.
