The School of Nursing is celebrating 50 years of quality nursing education at Saskatchewan Polytechnic

April 5, 2017 – This spring the School of Nursing will celebrate 50 years of quality nursing education at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. The festivities will provide an excellent opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our current students, graduates, faculty and staff as well as honour the pioneering efforts of our alumni in advancing nursing education, research and scholarly work.

“Saskatchewan Polytechnic has been a leader in nursing education for registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, registered nurse/nurse practitioners and licensed practical nurses since 1967,” says Dr. Netha Dyck, dean, School of Nursing and School of Health Sciences. “It is exciting to see the evolution of nursing at Sask Polytech. We look forward to connecting with alumni and celebrating this important milestone.”

In 1967 the Nursing diploma program was established at what was then the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences. Over 50 years Sask Polytech’s School of Nursing has grown to include certificates, diplomas and degree programs.

Cindy Smith, associate dean, and chair of the school's 50 anniversary activities, says a highlight of the celebrations will be establishing a trust fund for nursing students.

"By supporting our future students, we are also honouring our rich history of student success," says Smith. "Through establishing a trust fund we are creating a legacy based on supporting scholarships and bursaries for future generations of students enrolled in School of Nursing programs."

Celebrations include campus tours, keynote speakers, fashion shows and banquet events.
