Program: Environmental Engineering Technology diploma
Erica Anaquod has a long history with Sask Polytech. She earned her Grade 12 here in 2009 and graduated with distinction from the Dental Assisting program in 2012. The First Nations mother of three is two classes shy of earning her Business certificate and is currently enrolled in the Environmental Engineering Technology program.
“I continue to choose Sask Polytech because of the culture. I feel safe, like I belong here,” Erica says. “The Indigenous Students’ Centre at the Moose Jaw campus is my favourite space. The advisors have not only been accommodating academically, but they also provide a safe place to discuss anything. It’s a community.”
Erica has overcome a lot of challenges to pursue her diploma. “I moved away from family, which is my support system. I’ve struggled and will most likely continue to struggle while studying, but I’m determined to complete my program to provide a better life for my children.”
To help achieve her goal, Erica has accessed a number of student services. “You name it, I have used it,” she says. “There are so many services available, and they’ve not only helped me be more successful as a student but also as a person and a parent.”
When asked where she sees herself working in the future, Erica says it changes. “Since starting the program, I’ve changed my mind about three times and will probably change a few more times. The more I learn, the more something else becomes interesting. As of right now, I’d like to open my own consulting company.”
