Twenty-nine Saskatchewan Polytechnic students won either gold, silver or bronze medals in this spring’s provincial skills competition hosted by Skills Canada Saskatchewan. Nine of the winners are also apprentices, registered with the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) and trained by Sask Polytech.
Apprentices, post-secondary students and high school students from across Saskatchewan competed in more than 25 categories for medals and the chance to represent the province at the Skills Canada National competition May 25 and 26 in Winnipeg. This is the first time the event has been held in-person since 2019.
Competition categories ranged from technical skills including computer animation; computer coding; robotics and photography; to skilled trades such as autobody repair; bricklaying; carpentry; machining; cooking; hairstyling and welding.
Skills Canada Saskatchewan plays a crucial role in promoting and developing the skilled trades in Saskatchewan. The organization provides opportunities for students to showcase their skills and knowledge in various skilled trades through competitions. Skills Canada Saskatchewan helps students develop their confidence and encourages them to continue their education in the skilled trades to prepare for future careers. Events were held at Sask Polytech’s Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, and Regina campuses.
Congrats to the Sask Polytech and SATCC winners! Some of the gold and sliver winners will continue onto the Skills Canada National competition later this month.
