Muskeg Lake Cree Nation and Saskatchewan Polytechnic partnership focuses on skills training opportunities for youth

February 12, 2021 – This week Saskatchewan Polytechnic signed a memorandum of understanding with Muskeg Lake Cree Nation. This new collaborative partnership will explore opportunities to promote meaningful skills training and educational opportunities for the youth of Muskeg Lake Cree Nation and ways to amplify community economic development and growth for the First Nation community.

“The focus of future plans is to include membership in decision making processes as well as to become self-sifficient individuals. The idea of training our own members lead to the negotiations with Sask Polytech,” said Muskeg Lake Cree Nation Chief and Council. “Through the provision and access to certified training our goal is to enable employment opportunities for our members. We want to provide our members with an opportunity to train in an environment that will build up their confidence and self-esteem. This is the initial step in preparing youth and adults to build on their skills and set their goals toward higher levels of training and potential journeymanship. We look forward to the next five years of building relationships while providing a wealth of opportunities for our membership.”

“We are very excited for this new partnership to provide new educational opportunities for Muskeg Lake Cree Nation youth,” said Dr. Larry Rosia, Saskatchewan Polytechnic president and CEO. “Sask Polytech will provide the Indigenous youth with the skills they need to help meet the economic and community goals of Muskeg Lake Cree Nation. This important partnership could potentially include trades training, and recreation and community development training.”

Projects may include Sask Polytech School of Continuing Education courses from the Carpentry applied certificate program, stewards of the land programming or entry-level parks operations training. The memorandum of understanding between Muskeg Lake Cree Nation and Sask Polytech is for a five-year term.

Sask Polytech is committed to the renewal of relationships — miyo wahkohtowin — with Indigenous communities. For Sask Polytech, this means we must integrate Indigenous ways of being, knowing, teaching and learning in everything we do. This partnership with Muskeg Lake Cree Nation supports miyo wahkohtowin.
