“Think about the benefits of pushing through and how rewarding it will feel.”

Emmet Constant is the second person in his family to pursue a Justice Studies diploma at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. He’s following in his older sister’s footsteps who now works at Pine Grove Correctional Facility north of Prince Albert. He sees it as a steppingstone to a great career.

Emmet juggles a full class schedule with full time work in the hospitality industry. He says, “I am proud to have managed both full time work and studies. I was able to find time to take part in a two-week cultural study program in Mexico. Learning about the judicial system in Mexico and about Mayan culture has been a highlight of my education.”

Connecting with Indigenous student advisors and using the Indigenous Students’ Centre while on campus were important to Emmet’s success, including receiving student bursary funds which helped financially. He says: “I wish I had more time to enjoy immersing myself in campus life as the time goes by fast.”

Emmet sees himself working at the Saskatchewan Federal Penitentiary or with the RCMP.

His advice for others. “I’d like them to know Sask Polytech instructors are very supportive and want you to succeed.”
