“Post-secondary is more focused and more inspiring than high school. I see myself as having a great future because of this.”

“We are a Saskatchewan Polytechnic family,” says Cameron Norrish, an Indigenous student enrolled in the Carpentry certificate program. He explains that both of his parents and his brother have attended Sask Polytech. His mom is a nurse and his brother a paramedic. He says, “My dad is a Journeyperson carpenter and has run his own company for years. I chose Sask Polytech because I would like to pursue the same career as he did.”

Cameron says the hands-on instruction has been a highlight for him, as well as the real-world experience his instructors bring to the table. “My instructors share their own personal experience from industry,” he says. “It makes it so interesting.”

He’s made excellent use of the student support services available to him. “I have used the Indigenous Students’ Centre to get work done in a nice, quiet place and I use the gym and fitness centre almost daily.” He’s also successfully applied for awards and says his Indigenous student advisor “has been the biggest help so far.”

When asked what advice he’d offer friends, he says, “I would tell them post-secondary is more focused and more inspiring than high school. I see myself as having a great future because of this.”

Upon graduation, he hopes to manage a crew for his father’s company. “Once he retires, I would like to assume his role and run the company.”
