Practical Nurse Re-Entry

Practical Nurse Re-entry is an applied certificate program for individuals who:

  • have previously been registered in Canada as licensed practical nurses and are eligible for re-registration in Saskatchewan
  • are practical nurses but have not been registered in Canada as licensed practical nurses and require or want to prepare to write the national registration exams (Assessment Strategies Inc.)
  • want to update and evaluate their knowledge and skills
  • You will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to reach the competencies required for a beginning practical nurse graduate.

    This program is available in full through distance and/or part-time continuing education. For complete program information, check the program page.

    Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) and transfer credit may be options for receiving credit. For further information see the PLAR candidate guide (pdf) or the transfer credit page.


You will be introduced to basic computer concepts. The course content includes computer components, hardware, software, working in a graphical user interface, file management, word processing and the Internet. The general skills you learn will prepare you for further courses, such as word processing, spreadsheets and presentation graphics.

You will learn how to perform a health history and physical examination of clients in various stages across the lifespan. You will explore the challenges related to aging. The assessment will include physiological, spiritual, developmental and environmental data. Your 12 hour lab experience will help you gain expertise in documenting a health history and performing a physical examination on a healthy adult.

You will discuss the growth and development of the older adult and the concept of health aging. Your studies will focus on the concepts of holistic nursing care related to specific health challenges of older adults. Using the primary health care approach, you will explore chronic health challenges specific to various body systems and approaches to their management.

You will explore the concept of self in relation to others. You will review basic therapeutic communication skills. Through reflection and understanding your nature, you will experience awareness, personal growth and development of critical thinking skills. You will focus on therapeutic relationships with an emphasis on caring, advocacy and diversity.

Within a caring, holistic context, you will explore current trends and issues (including holistic health, primary health care, health promotion and determinants, teaching strategies and legal/ethical issues). You will also examine the changing role of the LPN and the culture of patient safety.

Your studies will focus on the concepts of holistic nursing care related to specialized areas of nursing. You will study rehabilitation nursing, palliative care, mental health nursing, family centered perinatal nursing, pediatric nursing, community nursing and perioperative nursing.
