Medical Device Reprocessing Education

Saskatchewan Polytechnic School of Nursing, Continuing Education has developed four home study (print based, tutor supported) courses on Medical Device Reprocessing.

Grade 12 and English Language Proficiency are pre-requisites for the courses.

A practicum component will be available after the completion of the four courses. Practicum dates are dependent on availability of practicum sites.

You will discuss the inspection, sorting, assembling, packaging and storing instruments. Aspects of preparing equipment to be sterilized will be covered. You will study the various classifications of surgical instruments including specialty and by service categories. Policies and procedures related to these areas will also be identified.

Related Courses

You will study the microbiological principles of sterilization. You will study the various methods of sterilization including steam, EtO and low level sterilizers. This course will also focus on monitoring the sterilization process, discussing loaner instruments and identifying components of storage, distribution and transportation of sterile supplies.

Prerequisites: Medical Device Reprocessing - Inspection, Assembly and Packaging (MED 1603)

You will apply theory and skills in an approved medical device reprocessing department. You will participate in the different aspects of medical device reprocessing including decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage and transportation. You will work under the supervision of a manager/supervisor and work directly with a medical device reprocessing technician. You will model professional attitudes and practices in all aspects of your assigned duties.
