Medical Laboratory Assistant

Medical Laboratory Assistant is an applied certificate program that provides the knowledge and skill development needed to perform a specific range of specimen collection and pre-analytic procedures in the medical laboratory. Your clinical experience, consisting of 9 weeks, may take place anywhere in Saskatchewan and at multiple sites. Graduates are eligible to write the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) Medical Laboratory Assistant national certification examination.

Selected courses in this program are available through distance and/or continuing education. The program is available full time at Saskatchewan Polytechnic campus in Saskatoon. For complete program information, check the program page.

This is a high demand program. The application period is October 1 to February 15 each academic year. Applications are currently restricted to Canadian residents.


You will study the transmission of microorganisms, blood-borne pathogens (i.e. hepatitis virus and HIV), standard precautions, isolation procedures, immunization for medical workers, sterilization and disinfection, biohazardous waste, safety and WHMIS.
