Aboriginal Student Achievement Plan

At Saskatchewan Polytechnic, helping students achieve their educational and career goals is our top priority. No matter where they come from or who they are, we work hard to ensure students have an equal opportunity to succeed.

ASAP was developed to provide Indigenous students with a variety of services that enhance the student experience and remove barriers to success. Enrolment for Indigenous students has increased 31 per cent since 2011-12. Sask Polytech has 3,700 Indigenous students; these students make up more than 18 per cent of the student population. In 2014-15 the employment rate for Sask Polytech’s Indigenous graduates was 84%. Indigenous students are an important part of our campus community.


ASAP provides Aboriginal students with a variety of services, developed to enhance the student experience and remove barriers to success. Services include:

We also employ an Aboriginal community coordinator to raise awareness about Saskatchewan Polytechnic in Indigenous communities, both urban and rural.

Indigenous students find success with ASAP; 98 per cent of students share they are satisfied or very satisfied with ASAP services. Also 92 per cent of indigenous students would recommend their academic program at Sask Polytech to others.

Indigenization with ASAP

Guided by the principles of reconciliation and a goal to create long-term positive change, Sask Polytech’s indigenization efforts holistically integrate Indigenous ways of knowing, teaching and learning into our practices, procedures and services. Continuing to put students’ needs first, ASAP created an Indigenization declaration that guides efforts to ensure students can see themselves and their culture reflected throughout the institution.

ASAP Belief Statement

We indigenize by holistically integrating Aboriginal ways of knowing, teaching, and learning within all of the institutional practices, procedures and services we provide to students, staff and communities. This results in Aboriginal people seeing themselves and their realities reflected in our institutional practices. It also results in non-Aboriginal people gaining the skills and knowledge that enable them to work with and live alongside their Aboriginal neighbours knowledgeably and respectfully. 

In 2008, a multidisciplinary committee was formed to identify areas for improvement, ultimately outlining 21 recommendations. Since then, many of these recommendations have already been incorporated into everyday life at Sask Polytech while work continues to be done on the remaining ones.

  1. Establish an Aboriginal Student Success Strategy implementation steering committee and hire a coordinator.
  2. Establish key performance indicators for Aboriginal participation and completion, giving priority to those programs with the lowest rates of Aboriginal student success.
  3. Develop proactive supports to assist Aboriginal students with the application process.
  4. Develop specialized information about finances and funding for Aboriginal students and support staff.
  5. Formalize an early intervention strategy for Aboriginal students experiencing difficulties.
  6. Establish a post-secondary summer transition program at each campus.
  7. Investigate on-campus physical/environmental barriers to Aboriginal student success.
  8. Develop a marketing and communications plan to raise awareness about Sask Polytech among Aboriginal people.
  9. Develop and offer a standard set of student support modules in key personal and academic skills at all four campuses.
  10. Develop specialized post-secondary preparatory programs within the Basic Education Division.
  11. Further investigate housing, child care and transportation barriers.
  12. Further investigate barriers specific to Basic Education students and recommend enrolment and completion targets for Basic Education programming.
  13. Develop and implement a strategy to assist Aboriginal English language learners.
  14. Address barriers created by Sask Polytech attendance practices.
  15. Further investigate barriers created by the academic progress policy.
  16. Further investigate barriers created by program structure and program prerequisites.
  17. Develop and implement targeted student recruitment activities.
  18. Establish an Aboriginal alumni network and Aboriginal role model program.
  19. Intensify Sask Polytech’s representative workforce efforts including the introduction of advanced training for faculty and staff in Aboriginal cultural differences and Aboriginal ways of knowing and learning.
  20. Integrate Aboriginal knowledge and ways of learning into programs including the development of alternative instructional and evaluation strategies.
  21. Further investigate barriers specific to apprenticeship students.
