Whether you are developing  or enhancing your facilitation skills, these courses will help you to become a facilitative leader by engaging staff and stakeholders .  Participants can use their ICA courses to qualify for further certification through the International Association of Facilitators (IAF) – www.IAF-World.org - and become a Certified™ Professional Facilitator (CPF). Fiber Optics Training

Highlights:

  • approved training by the Fiber Optic Association (FOA)
  • preparation to write the FOA exam for the Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) designation
  • no previous experience necessary but experience in an area of electrical, electronics, telecommunication or instrumentation is recommended
  • students who complete the course are eligible to write the FOA CFOT exam at the end of the course. The course fee includes the first year of membership in the FOA

Course Description:

A 35 hour training program that includes both the theory and practical aspects of fiber optic cable in the areas of communication and data transmission.

Designed for individuals who wish to increase their knowledge and gain hands-on skills in fiber optics technology in preparation for writing the Fiber Optics Association exam. The course has two components: a theory component, and a hands-on component where emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of working with fiber optic cables, including connectorization, fusion splicing and testing.

General Course Objectives:

  • introduction to the basic concepts of optical fibers
  • study of fiber optics networks
  • study of cable types and specifications
  • perform hands-on terminations of optical fiber
  • perform hands-on splicing of optical fiber, including fusion and mechanical splicing
  • study basic concepts of optical testing, such as sources/power meters and OTDR

What You Will Learn:

  • the basics of fiber optics
  • the different types of fiber and cables
  • information transmission and fiber optic LAN
  • sources of light loss in fiber
  • how to specify fiber optic cable
  • types of fiber optic connectors, splicers and tools
  • fiber polishing and cleaning
  • fiber cable hardware
  • numerical aperture, bandwidth, attenuation
  • mechanical splicing, joining fiber, fusing, cleaning and scribing
  • guidelines for fiber optic designs and installations
  • cable installation and loss budget analysis
  • fiber optic installation safety
  • fiber optic cable pulling
  • test equipment and fiber optic testing
  • OTDR

Who Should Attend:

Although no previous experience is necessary, this course is mainly directly to those who have some technical background in the areas of electrical, electronics, telecom or instrumentation, as well as others who have been involved in the telecom or CATV industries.

What You Will Gain:

Upon successful completion of this course you will have the knowledge and skills to install state-or-the-art cabling for telephones, security system, CATV and LANS. You will be able to install and terminate fiber cables, as well as troubleshoot and document fiber systems within industry specifications, Successful completion will lead to certification by the Fiber Optic Association as a Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT).

Designed for managers and supervisors, this unique, blended learning Leadership and Coaching program provides leadership strategies to effectively lead individuals and teams. Build your leadership style by learning Crane’s coaching model, practising effective coaching and communication techniques and finalizing your Leadership Action Plan. You will receive coaching to support your leadership journey.

Our expert instructors will lead you through five sequential modules of online learning and classroom practice; 24 hours in the classroom and 36 hours online (self-paced). Students will receive a Certificate of Achievement from Saskatchewan Polytechnic upon successful completion of LEAD 010. This 60 hour course receives 4 credit units.

 

Program Content:

The Program consists of the following 5 modules:

Module 1: Introduction to Leadership and Coaching Online: Jan 4 to Feb 6/18
Module 2: Identifying and Enhancing your Leadership Strengths Classroom: Feb 7, 8, 9 (half-day Feb 9)
Module 3: Coaching Practise Online: Feb 13 to Mar 22/18
Module 4: Leading Self, Leading Others Classroom: March 23/18
Module 5: Leadership in Action Online: March 26 to April 30/18

Classroom sessions are mandatory and held at our Regina Campus.

 

Introduction to Leadership and Coaching (Module 1 – online)
  • Determine personal leadership strengths using StrengthsFinder Self-Assessment
  • Examine Crane’s Leadership and Coaching model
  • Learn the importance of goal setting

 

Identifying and Enhancing your Leadership Strengths (Module 2 – classroom)
  • Build on leadership strengths and learn how to use your strengths when leading others
  • Discuss the importance of clear communication and feedback when coaching and leading others
  • Learn the reasons for conflict and discover a model for reducing conflict in the workplace
  • Using Crane’s Coaching model, practise an introductory coaching scenario
 
Coaching Practice (Module 3 – online)
  • Demonstrate leadership knowledge and skills through the coaching process
  • Engage in peer-to-peer coaching with a classmate
  • Practice coaching with a workplace partner
 
Leading Self, Leading Others (Module 4 – classroom)
  • Review workplace coaching experiences and identify leadership strengths and challenges
  • Identify leadership behaviors which build strong teams- Review models to build highly effective teams
  • Learn an approach to decision-making

 

Leadership in Action (Module 5 – online)
  • Apply leadership and coaching knowledge and skills
  • Write your personal leadership action plan incorporating your leadership vision and values
  • Participate in a one-on-one coaching session with a coach instructor

 

Evaluation:

Students will receive a percentage grade. The coaching assignment, comprehensive exam and other short assignments will be graded and evaluated by the instructor(s).
 

Possible funding sources:

LEAN Fundamentals Boot Camp - Two-Day Workshop

This intensive two-day program equips students with the fundamentals of LEAN, from basic history and terminology to core tools and concepts.  Students will apply their learning through practical activities and simulations so by the end of the course, students will:

  • Recognize the eight types of waste and how to identify them in their daily work
  • Know common LEAN terms and acronyms and the principles of standardized work
  • Have he basic skills needed to begin to explore the use of lean tools such as:
    • value stream mapping,
    • 5S methodology and Kanban systems in their work place
  • Be better prepared to solve problems and improve workplace processes

The training days will be structured as follows:

  • Day One: Introduction to LEAN theory and tools

St. Francis Xavier University’s Adult Education Diploma
