Medical Laboratory Technology
Medical Laboratory Technology is a diploma program that provides
knowledge and skill development in applying scientific, technical and
medical principles to perform and evaluate a broad spectrum of
laboratory tests in a health care environment. You will also gain an
appreciation of the medical laboratory technologist’s role as a
professional member of the health care team. The program is based on the
Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science’s competency profile
(with appropriate topics added to address local needs). It includes 41
weeks of clinical experience.
Graduates are eligible to apply to write the national certification exam
set by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and
for licensure with the Saskatchewan Society of Medical Laboratory

You will explore the structure and function of organs and systems in the
normal human body. Your studies will focus on the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and endocrine systems.

Building on the knowledge gained in APHY 191 (Anatomy & Physiology
1) you will continue your study of the structure and function of the normal
human body. Your studies will focus on the cardiovascular, immune,
respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.

You will study the transmission of microorganisms, blood-borne pathogens (i.e. hepatitis virus and HIV), standard precautions, isolation procedures, immunization for medical workers, sterilization and disinfection, biohazardous waste, safety and WHMIS.

You will learn the prefixes, suffixes and combining forms from which
medical terms are derived. You will also learn medical abbreviations.
