Early Childhood Education Certificate

Early Childhood Education is a certificate program that provides knowledge and skill development in establishing a safe, secure and stimulating environment for children. You will develop an understanding of children’s varying physical, social, cognitive, creative and emotional development. You will also develop an understanding of the importance of play as a vehicle for learning. The program meets the license requirement ECE II classification of the Child Care Regulations, 2001, Early Years Branch, Ministry of Education.

This program is available in full through distance and/or continuing education. The program is available full-time at Saskatchewan Polytechnic campus in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Polytechnic campus in Regina and Saskatchewan Polytechnic campus in Prince Albert. You may take the following courses prior to application and acceptance to the program, but must apply thereafter: COMM 291, ECE 106, ECE 142, EMPL 180, HUMD 100 and HUMD 183.


Your studies will focus on the period of development from conception to adolescence. You will receive information about the effects of heredity and the environment on the emotional, social, cognitive and physical development of children and adolescents. The course also provides an introduction to the theories of learning and personality and methods of studying human behaviour.
