Girls GETT interested in trades, technology at Sask Polytech

Scooter races cap week-long exploration camp for girls presented by SaskPower   


July 20, 2016 - Girls from grade six to eight will be attending week-long trades and technology camps at Saskatchewan Polytechnic this month, presented by SaskPower. Girls Exploring Trades and Technology (GETT) camps provide girls a safe, supportive environment to explore the tools, equipment and skills needed for a trades and technology career.

GETT campers are taught axle building, carpentry and computer design skills as they create and assemble scooters. The Saskatoon campus GETT camp wraps up with a pizza lunch and fun competition in which the girls race their scooters.

The camps are designed to dispel myths around females pursing trades and technology training and careers. "GETT camps allow girls to build self-awareness and confidence while working with active female technologists and tradeswomen," says Jessica Baldwin, provincial facilitator and coordinator for Women in Trades and Technology at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. "The goal is to allow girls to see themselves working in one of the otherwise overlooked technology and trades occupations."
