Sharon Ahenakew returned from an Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada conference in Winnipeg last year with a new challenge she wanted to tackle. As Sask Polytech's Aboriginal nursing student advisor, she attended the conference with two of her students. During a workshop, they met a nursing student from the Maritimes who shared some of the challenges she was facing in her program. The concerns included a perceived lack of support to self-identify as Aboriginal, a perceived fear of discrimination, Aboriginal health being taught from a deficit-based approach, and a perceived lack of faculty knowledge in Aboriginal history, culture and ways of knowing.

Sask Polytech Nursing faculty member recognized nationally

At the national conference in Toronto, the Canadian Association of Practical Nurse Educators (CAPNE) announced Saskatchewan Polytechnic faculty member Roni Clubb as the recipient of their 2015 Leadership in Practical Nursing Education award. CAPNE is the national voice for practical nursing education in Canada.

Sask Polytech Prince Albert campus opens expanded simulation centre

Saskatchewan Polytechnic hosted the opening of the newly expanded Simulation Centre at the Prince Albert campus Academic building this afternoon. The Simulation Centre provides a lifelike, hands-on learning environment allowing students to practise skills in a variety of nursing and health sciences programs.

Sask Polytech's School of Nursing has released an update to InstruMentor™, a smartphone application that features photos, descriptions and audio pronunciation of the names of more than 70 surgical instruments.

Nursing faculty updates tools for assessing internationally educated nurses

Nursing faculty at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is updating tools used to assess the knowledge, judgment and skills of internationally educated nurses who want to practise as registered nurses (RNs) in Saskatchewan. The tools are used in Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) Assessment Centre in Regina, the only IEN assessment centre in the province. Health Canada is providing $750,000 for the project over two years.

Students currently enrolled in the online Collaborative Nurse Practitioner Program (CNPP) - offered jointly by the Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the University of Regina - are in Regina this week, as part of their studies.
