Meet Kevin Wesaquate: Sask Polytech's artist and writer in residence

When Kevin Wesaquate began writing poetry, he started looking for an Aboriginal writers group to join. “I went out into my community and tried to find other Aboriginal poets and groups of pos-sible peers who would like to practise poetry with me, and I couldn't find any.” He ended up trav-elling across Canada in search of such a group, but was surprised to come up empty handed. “There was nothing like that that existed.” Undeterred, Wesaquate noticed an opportunity when he returned home.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic creates Indigenization Declaration Saskatchewan Polytechnic is reinforcing its commitment to the Aboriginal community November 16, 2015 - Saskatchewan Polytechnic has approved an Indigenization Declaration to reinforce its commitment to the Aboriginal community and to sustain long-term positive change. Earlier this year Saskatchewan Polytechnic signed the Indigenous Education Protocol and welcomed the recommendations by Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Sharon Ahenakew returned from an Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada conference in Winnipeg last year with a new challenge she wanted to tackle. As Sask Polytech's Aboriginal nursing student advisor, she attended the conference with two of her students. During a workshop, they met a nursing student from the Maritimes who shared some of the challenges she was facing in her program. The concerns included a perceived lack of support to self-identify as Aboriginal, a perceived fear of discrimination, Aboriginal health being taught from a deficit-based approach, and a perceived lack of faculty knowledge in Aboriginal history, culture and ways of knowing.

North West College, SIIT and Saskatchewan Polytechnic sign indigenous education protocol

North West College, the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) and Saskatchewan Polytechnic signed an indigenous education protocol today. This aspirational document reaffirms their commitment to indigenous education and provides a vision for how they can better serve indigenous peoples. The three post-secondary institutions are members of Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan), the organization that developed the protocol.
