Sask Polytech has experienced a lot of change in the last year and is familiar with the effort required to change the conversation, share new ideas and build up communities on our campuses. It was a pleasure sponsoring this great event, learning how we can contribute to innovative ideas and new ways of thinking across Saskatchewan. Steve McLellan, CEO of the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce and Sask Polytech alumnus, joined several dynamic speakers illuminating how cities and communities build themselves to thrive through difficult times.

Sask Polytech enjoyed being the visionary sponsor of TEDx, an event created in the spirit of TED's mission, “ideas worth spreading.” Sask Polytech Natural Resources program head and instructor, Dr. Hamilton Greenwood, was one of 13 TEDx speakers. Using his incredible wildlife photography, Hamilton explained how we can create better functioning communities and organizations if we take a moment to learn from nature by being mindful, embracing diversity and taking care of the unique.

Meet Kevin Wesaquate: Sask Polytech's artist and writer in residence

When Kevin Wesaquate began writing poetry, he started looking for an Aboriginal writers group to join. “I went out into my community and tried to find other Aboriginal poets and groups of pos-sible peers who would like to practise poetry with me, and I couldn't find any.” He ended up trav-elling across Canada in search of such a group, but was surprised to come up empty handed. “There was nothing like that that existed.” Undeterred, Wesaquate noticed an opportunity when he returned home.

Saskatoon LINC Students Tour Regina

Recently, two eager busloads of Saskatchewan Polytechnic students departed from the Saskatoon campus shortly after dawn on a field trip to Regina. Representing twenty-five countries of origin, these students from the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program, were off to tour three important historical sites: the Saskatchewan Legislature, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum of Natural History and the RCMP Training Depot, all to be accomplished in a marathon of twelve hours. The annual LINC trip to Regina is a great way to build friendships, practice English in a real-world setting and learn more about the exciting place the students call home - Saskatchewan!

What does it take to compete with the best and brightest students and apprentices in the skilled trades and technologies? Phillip Beug will tell you it's a combination of hard work, attention to detail and the ability to remain calm under pressure. And he should know. As a precision machining student at Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Regina campus, he brought home two medals at this year's 21st Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) held in Saskatoon from May 27 to 30 at Prairieland Park.
